HND 3 Subject Title :  Electronics (EEE 5203)

Credit Value : 3

Synopsis     : This unit develops a basic understanding of analogue electronics gained through previous study. It places particular emphasis on the use of current manufacturers’ data and modern circuit.

Subject Title : Control Systems and Automation (EEM 5723)

Credit Value : 3

Synopsis   : This unit is intended to give learners an insight into the principles of control engineering and how these principles can be used to model engineering systems and processes. A great deal of this unit involves mathematical analysis and theory, but practical situations will be examined using computer simulation tools.

Subject Title :  Project (EEP 5604)

Credit Value : 4

Synopsis      : This unit develop students’ ability to use the knowledge and  skills they develop at work and/or on an engineering programme to complete a realistic work project. The unit aims to integrate the skills and knowledge developed in other units of the course within a major piece of work that reflects the type of performance expected of a higher technician at work. It is designed to bring small groups of students together into multidisciplinary team, so that they can co-ordinate their individual skills and abilities. This allows them to develop the ability to work individually and with others, within a defined timescale and given constraints, to produce an acceptable and viable solution to an agreed brief.

Subject Title  :  Programmable Logic Controllers (EEM 5713)

Credit Value   : 3

Synopsis     : The aim of this unit is to investigate programmable logic controller (PLC) concepts and their applications in engineering. It focuses on the design characteristics and internal architecture of programmable logic control systems, the signals which are used and the programming techniques. The learners will be given the opportunity to produce and demonstrate a programme for a programmable logic device.

Subject Title  :  Manufacturing Electronic Products (EEP 5613)

Credit Value  : 3

Synopsis   : This unit introduces the learner to the concepts and practices of producing electronic products. The fabrication of microelectronic devices and their applications in printed circuit boards (PCBs) are discussed and through-hole and surface mount devices compared. The design and production of single and multi-layer PCBs are addressed. The design and fabrication of sheet metal and non-sheet metal casings for electronic products covered and assembly processes are discussed.

Subject Title :  English and Communication Studies 5 (UEC 5021)

Credit Value : 1

Synopsis   :The aim of this unit is to develop further understanding of communication skills specifically on presentation, writing memos and interview skills. In  presentation skills it is intended to increase students’ knowledge in Public Speaking skills and thus developing their confidence to give effective presentations. Students are thus given the exposure to communicate using impromptu speech. In the written communication skills it is aimed to increase students’ knowledge in written corporate communication skills. In the job interview component, students are exposed to recruitment process and the preparation needed to attend one successfully. Other skills like reading, listening and grammar will still be covered.
